Saturday 2nd June marked the end of the schools’ athletics calendar with the All-Ireland Schools’ Track ad Field Championships at Tullamore in County Offlay. 10 individual athletes and 3 relay teams qualified for the Irish Schools Athletics Championships at Tullamore Athletics Arena. The results from the day are as follows:

In the Minor Girls age group (Year 9) Etain McGuckian came 3rd in the 100m with a time of 12.82sec.

Tori Hopkins came 9th in the 800m with a time of 2.31minutes. The Minor Girls Relay team performed exceptionally well coming 2nd in Ireland with a time of 52.42sec. This meant that the Minor Girls athletic team were ranked 2nd overall on points throughout the day.

In the Intermediate Girls age group (Year 11 & 12) Alice Rodgers (Year 11) came 3rd in the 100m with a time of 12.38sec and 4th in the 200m with a time of 25.75secs.

Katie Agnew came 6th in the intermediate girls 1500m with a time of 4.57minutes.

In the Junior Boys age group (Year 10) Jordan Millar came 8th in the 200m with a time of 25.27sec. This was followed up with an impressive 1st place for the Junior Boys relay team, made up of Sam Booth, Christian Drennan, Lewis Wharry and Jordan Millar with a time of 47.09sec. This was only the second time in the school’s history that the Junior Boys relay team had won this event, with the previous occasion being back in 1974.

In the Intermediate Boys age group (Year 11 & 12) Jonathan Cochrane (Year 11) came 5th in the triple jump with a best jump of 12.46m. He continued this form by coming 9th in the long jump with a jump of 5.81m.

Joseph Mawhinney (Year 11) came 9th in the intermediate boys discus with a throw of 26.88m and James Wright (Year 11) came 5th in the javelin with a best throw of 45m. Craig Simpson (Year 12) came 8th in the 400m with a time of 54.72sec. The day was finished off with the Intermediate boys relay team narrowly missing out on a medal by coming 4th with a time of 44.58sec.

This meant that the schools overall medal tally consisted of:

Gold – 1

Silver - 1

Bronze – 2

Mr. Johnston, who was in Tullyamore, praised all the athletes for their outstanding effort. He commented that they had done really well, considering that many were competing against athletes at least one year older. He underlined that a good foundation had been laid for next year.

He also thanked all the parents and friends who had travelled to Tullamore for their tremendous support and encouragement.
