Senior Debating Society
The Senior Debating Society meets twice a month to debate and discuss a wide range of topics.
The society is open to every pupil in Years 11-14. The motions range from serious topics such as the role of feminism, to a more light-hearted analysis of the best Christmas movie ever made. The debates are always conducted with great passion and humour.
The Senior Debating Society started again for the 2024-25 academic year after a two year break, and once again showcased passionate, enthusiastic, funny and, of course, determined speakers. Daniel McKane, Ollie Eaton and Monya Ahmed were elected as co-chairs, along with a dedicated committee.
The year started with a bang when it was decided that Kamala was indeed better than Trump, a sentiment not shared later in the year by the American public. This first debate set the standard for the level of commitment and preparation needed to deal with the many Points of Information offered throughout the year.
Focusing on issues closer to home, the motion that Brexit has been a mistake was successfully defeated by the pro-Brexit side.
Keeping with current events, two of the chairmen, Ollie Eaton and Daniel McKane, went head-to-head on the matter of assisted dying. Male privilege, another divisive topic, saw Amy Baird successfully defend the role of men in society.
As exam tension built up, school reform was debated to try to bring quality education to all… and a lot fewer exams. The final debate on the existence of God was of an incredible standard which highlighted just how far everyone had come in their debating skills. It has been a brilliantly fun, memorable, informative and at times controversial year and has been something I have loved being a part of. We wish the new committee all the best for next year.
