NEBSSA

The NEBSSA Athletics area heats took place at the Antrim Forum on Wednesday 27th April. Athletes from Ballymena Academy were excited to be back and competing again after missing 2 seasons of athletic competitions due to Covid. From the 80 plus athletes that Ballymena Academy had entered, over 50 individual athletes and the majority of relay teams, made it through to the NEBSSA Finals on Friday 13th May, again at the Antrim Forum.
Ballymena Academy athletes competed and represented the school well with the following individuals and relay teams medalling on the day.

This meant that Ballymena Academy came away with the following overall trophies.

o 3rd overall in U13 Girls
o 3rd overall in U14 Girls
o 3rd overall in U15 Girls
o 3rd overall in U16 Girls
o 2nd overall in U14 Boys
o 1st overall in U16 Boys
o The Girls were subsequently awarded the trophy for 2nd overall, on points, throughout the whole competition.

District Athletics Championships

The District Athletics Championships took place at the Antrim Forum on Wednesday 4th May. Ballymena Academy had a large representation, at the competition, with 101 individuals and 10 relay teams competing. Of these athletes 20 individuals and 5 relay teams qualified for the Ulster Schools Athletics Championships.

Ulster Secondary Schools Athletics Championships

The Ulster Championships took place on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st May at the Antrim Forum Athletics track.
The sun was shining and it added to, what was, a very enjoyable and successful day for Ballymena Academy athletes. The results are as follows:

 Emma Carroll – 8th in the Mini Girls 100m.
 Katie Hilditch – 5th in the Minor Girls 800m.
 Bella Morrow – 7th in the Minor Girls High Jump.
 Minor Girls 4x100m relay team – 5th in Ulster.
 Evie McKeown – 7th in the Junior Girls Javelin.
 Charlotte Thompson – 5th in the Senior Girls 1500m.
 Senior Girls 4x100m relay team – 1st in Ulster.
o The team was made up of Emmie Booth, Tory Hopkins, Susie Brown and Etain McGuckian.
 Dyland Harrison – 8th in the Minor Boys 100m.
 Zac Topping – 7th in the Minor Boys Shot.
 Minor Boys 4x100m relay team – 6th in Ulster.
 Ryan Berry – 11th in the Junior Boys 1500m.
 Peter Cochrane – 1st in the Junior Boys Triple Jump.
 Charlie Hargy – 2nd in the Junior Boys Shot.
 Tom Wylie – 6th in the Intermediate Boys 200m.
 Matthew Cahoon – 7th in the Intermediate Boys Javelin.
 Matthew Cahoon – 3rd in the Intermediate Boys Shot.
 Sam Booth – 2nd in the Senior Boys 100m.
 Freddy Young – 2nd in the Senior Boys Javelin.
 Jamie Paul – 1st in the Senior Boys Pole Vault.
 Senior Boys 4x100m relay team – 2nd in Ulster.
o The team was made up of Freddy Young, Tom McMaster, Conor Drain and Sam Booth.

Congratulations to all of the athletes that competed at the Ulster Championships and we wish the following athletes all the very best as they travel down to Tullamore to compete in the All Ireland Schools Athletics Championships on Saturday 4th June.

Irish Secondary Schools Athletics Championships

Congratulations to the following pupils who competed at the Irish Secondary Schools Athletics Championships, at Tullamore, on Saturday 4th June.

Jamie Paul – 3rd in the Senior Boys Pole Vault – 3.80m
Matthew Cahoon – 6th in the Intermediate Boys Shot -12.14m

Senior Boys relay – 6th in Ireland – 45.24 secs

Ulster Interprovincial Athletics Squad

Following on from his success at both Ulster and Irish level, Matthew Cahoon has been selected onto the Ulster Interprovincial Athletics squad to compete in the Shot in the Tailteann Games on Friday 24th June at Tullamore. Congratulations to Matthew on this fantastic achievement.
